Topic created by Orienteer7 on Wed Feb 9, 2022 at 1:55 pmWe were recently notified by Hickory Run State Park that the park is planning significant work on the camps at the park starting in September 2022 and the camps and camp areas will be under construction and unavailable. The park has graciously offered the weekend of Friday August 19th through Sunday August 21 for our training weekend. We have tentatively accepted this weekend. The DVOA local event calendar has been changed to reflect this. We will keep you posted should something change.Information on registration and the weekend will be available in the summer.Mark FrankDVOA Scheduler

Reply by Steve on Thu Jul 21, 2022 at 7:42 amNo, we have not posted anything yet, and some things are still being finalized. What we do know is that some things will change. Since school is not in session, we are not looking for as many youth groups. Since it is summer, we will not have as many trainers. (If you think you could be a trainer, call Mary. We will be glad to make you an assitant if that is to your liking.)The training programs will be a bit more free form. I am setting up the intermediate training, which will have three courses that you can try and then discuss what happened. One course will be a marked walk that you must draw the flags onto a blank map. the next will be a memory O and the last will be a contour only mar. Each will last about 45 minutes, depending on your skill level.Julie will be running the beginner training, using the same set up as normal, but in a more free form style. Again, do what you want and discuss afterwards. No one has volunteered to run the advance training, so you can join me at intermediate.Greg has agreed to put together an afternoon short course if that is more to your liking.Food is being worked on right now. It will not be a full kitchen, and some meals will be a fend for yourself, either a brown bag or going out to eat.More to come, thanks for the interest.Steve

Reply by Steve on Fri Aug 5, 2022 at 7:51 amI am pleased to say things are coming together. We have gained four assistant trainers, so that is good (Thanks guys) Advanced training is still going to be with me (although we are still soliciting some people). If so, they will run the same courses I described above for Intermediate, but on the clock to add some challenge. The kitchen also has gained some volunteers, but could use more if you have some time. There will be five meals available, with grill man extrodanaire Steve Reeps flipping pancakes or stirring oatmeal again. Any Hickory Run veterns know what a treat that is.The schedule of events for the weekend is now posted on the event schedule. There is always room for more help, so come join the fun. By the way, Hickory Run is always ten degrees cooler than the city so come relax, cool down, and find your peace in the woods.
