Great news everyone! Washington Crossing this Saturday is a GO!
Thanks to Mary Frank's persistence and patience, we have retained access to one of our nicest NJ venues. And it projects to be ideal orienteering weather on Saturday -- sunny and low 60's -- so come out for a run (or walk) in the woods.
SPECIAL NOTES: We do have to provide all sorts of extra information and procedures to accomodate the Park's concern for everyone's safety. So we need to have everyone pre-register at registermenow@dvoa.org listing your name(s), cell phone #(s), course(s), and the numbers in your group. Park officials want this information BEFORE the event, so please register as soon as possible. Even if you just think you might attend, please pre-register. (And plan to take your cell phone out on the course with you.)
We will also need plenty of volunteers in order to staff special checkpoints and administrative procedures. So we are asking all DVOA veterans to consider giving us at least a little of your time before or after you go out on your course. We are very fortunate to be able to continue using Washington Crossing. So please be gracious and welcoming to all Park officials.
COURSE NOTES: These are the courses we had printed last October to debut the newly revised map of Washington Crossing. Veterans may recognize the park, but not the map. Some old dense field areas have now grown into new-growth woods and some dense woods have thinned out, revealing great new terrain and features where no orienteer has ever dared to go. Even the areas you are more familiar with have new features and other refinements. So we're hoping for some eye-opening route choices you have never considered before.
For those less familiar with the park, Washington Crossing boasts very user-friendly terrain, (almost no rock, no cliffs to speak of, precious little marsh and easily avoided dark green), featuring moderate hills sloping down to an intricate system of long creek-bed reentrants (with lots of side reentrants) all draining down to the Delaware River. There is a generous mix of open as well as greener woods, open lawn and high grass fields, meandering trail system, and old farm fields that are quickly becoming interesting mazes of mixed growth. The new map definitely offers lots of choices for course setting.
All the courses use only the terrain that has been completed so far. (Just wait until our annual October event when we will debut the map for a second time, now expanded to the complete park!) Come out to the wilds of New Jersey and enjoy this great park.
