The French Creek West (FCW) map is not used as often as some other maps, and for good reason. In addition to the expected aging issues such as changed trails and buildings, much of the vegetation has changed as well, and not for the better. While the green areas are probably still pretty accurate, the open forest and some clearings have been unevenly overrun with underbrush including some nasty briars of various types. On top of that, there is a substantial amount of deadfall littered about. The good news is that this early in the season, the visibility is pretty good and the undergrowth is manageable. I have done my best to avoid the worst of the overgrown areas and not tempt people into obvious routes that turn out much worse than mapped. You may, however, find it necessary to make frequent adjustments in your path through the woods to avoid the worst of the briar patches and deadfall as you come across them. As a result, net pace is probably going to be slower than expected, and maintaining a bearing harder than usual. I expect the intermediate and advanced courses to be a bit longer and more challenging than they appear on paper. There are two substantial trail re-routings that will be marked on a map at registration, but the courses are designed to take these changes out of play for reasonable route choices. No paved roads are crossed, however all but the White course might use a route the runs along the main park road for a short stretch, so be careful if you find yourself there.
