Event Director: Bob Gross
Course Setter: Erik Eddy and see choices to Volunteer to help at this event 🙏
Notes: We are using the Kulptown Fire Company lot and pavilion as our event center, so use the directions for the Rt 345 side of the map
ED/CS Notes:
The day before Easter, come experience a truly special event. The beginner orienteer will discover a wilderness experience all on trails in this rustic park, discovering a beautiful resourvoir along the way. The elite orienteer will be pushed to physical and navigational limits in this 2013 National Event terrain. The older advanced orienteer will spend nearly all of the course off-trail on a 3 km Brown.
The event is staged out of Kulptown Firehouse (be careful with the generic directions printed on this schedule page). Birdsboro Preserve is a local gem in the Hopewell Big Woods but lacks much infrastructure. For that reason, there is a remote start (about 1/2 mile).
Foot-O: The map is generally in good shape and the woods have been very pleasant throughout the winter (much different than June!). The area is generally hilly so advanced courses may be slightly more physical than normal: use your judgement on course choice.
Mountain Bike-O: The map is derived from the foot-o map to a simplified map where trail ridability is the main feature. All controls are on the trail (must stay on trails) and are not on a \"feature\". The challenge will be quickness in reading the map and route choice. You must have experience with riding on rough trails. Many of the trails are double track and are considered easier technical mountain biking for this region, but there are many long ascents and descents. The long course will take you by all three of the resourvoirs, get you a glimpse of the recent logging, challenge your route choice and have a very scenic navigational challenge on bike.
Start/Finish: The start/finish area is about 1/3 of a mile from the registration area. To accomodate, we plan to have a clothing drop and water jugs/food at the finish, which you will pass before going to the start. Those who would like to do both foot-o and bike-o course have the option to sign up for both courses at registration and begin their 2nd course immediately after finishing with walking/biking back to registration. Please come early if this is your plan!
Helping out: Please contact Bob Gross or use the volunteer sign up sheet if you would like to help. An easy way to help out for early starters would be carrying some items to the remote finishing area.
Carpool: If the turnout is large, the parking area could be an issue. Consider carpooling or perhaps leaving a car down the road at Daniel Boone High School.
