Start times from 10am to Noon – General Public until 1pm.

Having found a home for our Area 4 Naval JROTC Championship at Tyler State Park the past two years, we have this year upgraded our Staging Area to the spacious and accommodating Upper Plantation Picnic Grove just inside the major park entrance – first picnic grove after turning right at the first stop sign inside the park.

It features a pavilion for Registration and Download, nearby facilities that we will augment with a port-o-john, ample surrounding areas for all units to stake out a home base, with nearby parking for buses after unloading.  It resolves so many of the logistical inconveniences we’ve faced the past two years.

And by changing the original October 20th date to the following Saturday October 27th, we found a great solution to the problems created by competing for space and avoiding the annual Disc Golf Championship course that fills much of the same area, which put a serious crimp on setting courses.  Now we have the run of the place and can optimize our courses.

And even better, Park staff in partnership with Disc Golf volunteers are restoring and opening up sizeable areas that had been devastated by the invasion of the emerald ash borer leading to the proactive mass felling of all ash trees.  So now there is more room to roam around in.

  • We will be offering our usual six courses in the competition – White, Yellow (Begnr & Advd), Intermediate Orange, and Advanced Brown and Green.  So all cadets can compete on a course that matches their skills and level of orienteering experience.
  • All contestants must be members of Area 4 Units and Units must Pre-Register to be part of the Championship.  Deadline for Pre-Registration is snail mail postmarked by Friday, Oct 19 or emailed by the end of Monday, Oct 22.  But please don’t wait till the last minute. J   First come, first served on early Start times.

So come prepared for a great Championship competition navigating around Tyler, nailing control features, and sharing the day with hundreds of fellow cadets.

Note to Club Members and General Public – Everyone is more than welcomed to run one of our courses.  And for you more ambitious orienteers, we will also be offering a Red course.

PRE-REGISTRATION is REQUIRED to compete for the championship (though anyone, JROTC or public, can run a course).

We promise that it will be a great event for your cadets.

If you havenít already received our Registration Packet, please download the accompanying documents (links below), share it with other unit leaders you know, and submit it to our Registrars as soon as possible.

And as a bonus, here's an entertaining article "Staying On the Map” written by the course setter about the most essential fundamentals of orienteering.
