My family and I were at Hickory Run State Park last weekend and thought it would be fun to try orienteering--and really enjoyed it. We did the beginner and first half of the intermediate permanent courses one day without much trouble (though we took our time), and then decided to try the advanced permanent course the next day because we figured we were experts :). We gave up battered and bruised after finding 5 of the 7 controls, but had a great time (will remember next time not to wear shorts while bushwhacking!)

We live in northern Delaware and would like to do more, and I didn't know if people had advice for where to go and what to do? It sounds like there are virtual courses you can do using mobile apps, and maybe there are some courses still up from a recent event in French Creek State Park?

    Any advice is appreciated!

a great start would be a permanent course under "For Beginners" "Permanent Courses".
Virtual courses may be found at usynligo.no.  There is a big range of difficulty.  Be careful!  There is a virtual course at Hickory Run.  We enjoyed it and kids will love the little tune you get at each control.

Note that while there are UsynligO virtual courses listed for French Creek, they are on the French Creek East map and served as a training exercise for elite junior orienteer Anthony R. However, UsynligO lets you switch to "score O" (i.e., find what you can) mode after your first control located. The courses from this past Sunday are not on UsynligO.
