The McKaig Nature Center will be having a contactless Score-O on June 20th.

There will be day and evening start times.

    Map pickup will be outdoors.

All registrations will be preregistrations (details to be posted later).

It will use real orienteering flags but letter/number codes instead of punches.

The courses will be scored like a score-O but each person will be given a map with some controls that must be done in order, and others that can be mixed in.  This will help spread contestants out a bit.

    More details soon.

Orienteeing?  In the woods?  For real?  I hear it is fun and would like to try it.  Thank you!

Here is the link for the event at McKaig:   https://www.enjoymckaig.org/content.aspx?page_id=4002&club_id=383980&item_id=1216297

Starts  between 10 AM - 12 Noon   or 6 PM to 8 PM.   If you register for one time and decide later to come at the other time, that is fine.

$12 for DVOA members.  This is a McKaig event that I am putting on.  DVOA gets 10% of the gross for use of its map.

If you haven't been to McKaig before, it's a very hilly experience.  It's only 90+ acres including the adjacent school ground, but the upper woods are very runable.  It's been a very nice place during this Covid stuff - one of the few places open.

The event is more or less a Score-O.  To encourage social distancing, you must start with a designated control.  The scoring scheme will encourage you to follow a basic order, grabbing the mandatory controls in order (around 8 or so) and adding in the optional controls (another 16) in between.  After the first control, you can do the controls in whatever order you want, but your score will be lower.

Preregistration only.  Map pickup will be outside the old Roberts schoolhouse.

There will be no port-a-potty for this event. (sorry!)

The controls will be normal orienteering flags, but with letter and number codes instead of E-punch.  The difficultly will be orange-ish.

A have a QR code cellphone "punching" system you can use, or you can just write down a letter code posted on the control.   The QR code system does NOT require an app to be installed.

I don't expect runners to be carrying around a cellphone, though.   If you don't feel like dealing with carrying a cell phone around, just keep track of your finds and your time, please.

Thank You for organizing this.  I have been scanning the tri state schedules for weeks and nothing is happening on the schedued events horizion, I myself tried to have two HVO events at Fort Lee, nj-  in March and Tatum (New map revision 90% complete) county park (May 18th ugh!), both cancelled/Wuhan-covid issues ... and hope one of these parks/Orienteering sites  will remake the Oh schedule in the fall

Reminder that this event is preregistration only.   See above message for details.

Valley Forge Park is open again now if you want some additional mileage before or after; McKaig is also fairly close to the Willows / Skunk Hollow.

Start anytime between 10am - 12 noon or 6 - 8 PM; finish by 1:30 PM for the first window or 9:00 PM for the second window.

There is no porta potty for this event.

I ran an optimal route today and was disapointed in how quickly I was able to finish it...soo....

I've added a bonus extra point-to-point course - all 24 controls, 4.8 KM with 195 meters of climb.

This will only be in the packets for people who register as orienteering club members, or by request.  We'll space out starts for the point-to-point course at 5 minutes for social distancing.

Thank you for organizing this!  It has been soooo long since being in the woods for O. McKaig is a beautiful park.  Great place for a hot day, nice and shady almost everywhere, and several pretty little creeks. Best of all was the opportunity to do a Score 0 of whatever time limit one wanted (as long as back by 1:30) and no penalties!  Everyone I ran into (from a safe distance) was really enjoying themselves!
