    For this year's President's Cup we will have a standard white-course and a Choose-O Score-O.

    Date: Sunday January 26th, 2020.

Location:  Springton Manor Farm Park, Manor house area.

Note that the only vehicle entrance to the park is from the west off of Springton Rd (Google maps may try to route you through the closed northeast entrance).

There will be an indoor, heated area for registration, bathrooms, and post-event chatting.

Start and Finish are both within a few steps of the registration building.

Timing:  There will be a beginner class at 10AM and white course starts from 11AM-noon.

Starts for the Choose-O Score-O will be at any time from 12:00 noon until 12:30PM, with a mass start at 12:00 for those who want to take part.  You will have one minute to study your map and then you will punch start and begin your adventure!

Control Pickup will begin at 2PM (please consider staying around to help - you won't have to wait long for pickup to begin, and while the park is small we will have a lot of controls in the woods, so many people each covering a small area will be helpful).

Pre-Registration:  To save time on Sunday, there will be optional pre-registration and payment on Saturday at the Winter Meeting.

Map:  1:5000 scale.  10 ft contours.

    Courses:

    White:  1.8 km 50 m  14 controls

    Score-O Choose-O:  To visit all controls:  5.8 km 140 m    30 controls.

    Score-O Choose-O Long Version:    To visit all controls:  8.5 km 195 m    30 controls.

Both versions of the Score-O Choose-O use the same controls.  In the long version these controls are split between two copies of the Springton Manor map (controls 1-16 on map 1, controls 17-30 on map 2).  First you do all the controls you want on map 1. Then you go to the finish marked on map 1 where there will be a table with box to drop off your map 1 and a pile of map 2’s to take from (there is nothing to punch at the table).  Then you do all the controls you want on map 2 and end by going to the finish sawhorse marked on map 2. The controls will be split between the two maps in a way that hopefully creates some interesting route choice decisions.

What in the world is a Score-O Choose-O?

On your map(s) you will have thirty control locations indicated, numbered one to thirty.  In the area of each control location there will be anywhere from 0 to 10 flags, each with an e-punch box labeled something from 31 to 90.  Your job is to punch only the control box on the flag that is in the correct location as marked on the map and described in the clue. In a few cases, none of the controls will be placed correctly; in these situations you punch none of the controls.  By special request, to make things more interesting, at one control location there will be no controls at all!

In general, heights of objects will not be provided in the clues (so that you get to use the map to identify the correct flag).  However, on the one rootstalk control the height is provided to avoid confusion with smaller unmapped rootstalks. Also, no incorrect flags will be put on unmapped rootstalks.  In the clues, descriptors like the side of the feature on which the control is located will be provided. However, no control will be placed on the wrong side of the correct feature.  So if you know a control is on the correct boulder, you will not have to sit there and decide if the control is really on the north versus the northeast side of the feature or if a control was truly placed in the upper part of the correct re-entrant.

***You first control cannot be control number 10, 20, or 30 (they are very close to registration, so it would not be fun if everybody went to these first).  If you are doing the long version, you are allowed to visit 20 or 30 as your first control on map 2 (control 10 is on map 1).

    Scoring for Score-O Choose-O:

Each person starts with 100 points times the number of controls where there is no correctly placed flag.

Each correct control punched:  100 points

Each incorrectly punched control:  -100 points

Time Penalty:  -100 points per minute or part of a minute over the 90 minute time limit.

Ties are broken by the shorter time on course.

Some consequences and clarifications of these rules:

    • If you punch an incorrect control, recognize your error, and then punch the correct control, you get -100 points for the error and +100 points for the correction, so you end up with 0 net points for the control.  Similarly, if you punch the right control first and then change your mind and punch the wrong control you also end up with a net score of 0. If you punch two incorrect controls and no correct control you will score -200 points for that location.

    • If no control is placed correctly at a location, you will receive 100 points even if you do not visit that control site.  If you visit the control site and punch a wrong control you will get -100 points for a net of 0 points. There is no way to "undo" punching an incorrect control and go back to an answer of no control placed correctly.

so Sam, in the spirit of "Holy Cow!", if an dvoa member gets all 10 controls incorrect, he or she gets a whopping -100 pts each, for a negative 1000 points.  One would hope the rules commitee has rules that there are seperate incentives for a club low score-O score, like the new Dvoa Presidents, "fickle finger of fate" special tall Trophy and a special wrong way corrigan (control) award listing on the dvoa Results Posting after the fact.  my 2 cents... Great rules description fyi, now we know what you do in your spare time,  there maybe a job for you in Washington DC beauracracy or better known as  ledgislator 700 page law proposals team.  LOL

Actually, I did think that it would be a great challenge to try and get as negative a score as possible (without going over time - that is just a boring way to lose points).  You would have to try and find all of the misplaced controls that I hung, while not punching any of the correct flags.  I think you could end up with a score of around -4000 if you were really good (there are 30 correct control locations out there, not just 10).
