Course Notes for Summer Sprint Festival at Nolde – Aug 11

For an overview of the event, see the e-board post here.

    Notes for all courses:

    • There will be many areas marked out of bounds.  These are to protect eroading hillsides, fern glades, and other sensitive areas.  In order to protect the environment and our ability to use the park, stay out of these areas.  The courses have also been designed to create route choice challenges using the OB areas. In most cases, the OB area is bounded by trails - all trails are in bounds.
    • All courses begin by going south along the large trail from the start (the line to #1 is directly over the trail and can be a bit hard to see).
    • The park has a few fold-out educational display boards with small roofs that are mapped using the fodder rack symbol.  There is also a set of unconnected fence posts in the northwest part of the map that is mapped as a (very easily) crossible fence.
    • There is one water stop on the long Middle/Sprint Hybrid course, but no water on other courses.
    • There are lots of controls in a small area, so check your codes!  Some of the lines between controls have also been bent to improve clarity.

Beginner (White):    Length: 1.9km     Climb: 60m Controls: 10     Map Scale: 1:4000

Standard Sprint:    Length: 2.4km     Climb: 100m Controls: 12     Map Scale: 1:5000

    • One control location is mapped and clued as a rocky pit.  This pit is the entrance to an old man-made structure.

    Middle/Sprint Hybrid:

Short:  Length: 2.5km     Climb: 100m Controls: 12     Map Scale: 1:5000

Long:   Length: 4.5km     Climb: 210m Controls: 18     Map Scale: 1:7500

    • Control difficulty will vary from on trails to the easier end of advanced, though in the latter cases the legs will be pretty short and there will be a lot of controls in the area which should help you relocate if lost.

    Choose-O:    Length: 1.7km     Climb: 60m Controls: 12     Map Scale: 1:4000

    • In the area of each control location there will 1-4 flags, each with a punch. You must select the control that matches the location on the map and the control description, or decide that no flag is correctly placed (in which case you punch no control).
    • 3 minutes and 33 seconds will be added to your time for each error.
    • On the map/clue sheet the controls will be numbered 101 through 112.  These numbers do not correspond in any way to the numbers on the correct (if any) or dummy controls.
    • To avoid unintended punches, I recommend a standard e-punch for this course (not SI Air).

    Head-to-Head Sprint:    Length: 2.6km     Climb: 75m Controls: 17     Map Scale: 1:5000

    • The course will consist of two loops.  The first loop will end at control 6, which is located near the finish (control 6 is on the south side of a large trail while the finish is on the north side).  If you are using SI Air, don’t go too close to the finish after you first loop or your SI Air card will shut off.
    • Your will receive one piece of paper with two maps side-by-side.  The left map will show the start through control 6, the right map 6 to the finish.
    • There will be one forked leg, where you do one variant of the fork in your first loop and one variant in your second loop.  The order in which you do the forks will be determined by what map you get.
    • The second loop will contain a butterfly.  When you reach control 7 (50) you will do a small circuit of 2-3 controls, then return to control 50, do another circuit of 2-3 controls, return to control 50 a third time, and then do the rest of the course.  The order you do the two circuits will vary based on what map you get.
