Governor Dick is one of our largest maps, and this year we will be using all of that space by having a score-o/mini Rogaine.  The park has a great variety of terrain, with a fairly flat, less rocky, but greener western part, lots of white woods in the steeper northern part, and loads of big boulders in the south and far east.  With the score-o format, pick your favorite type of terrain and enjoy. The score-o format will also allow you to visit some neat areas that are hard to reach with standard courses.

Full course notes are included below (and will also be available at the event).
Note the map handout at 10:50 will mass start at 11AM.
Prices are the normal $7/$12 rate for members/non-members.

    White:  1.9km, 90m, 10 controls.        Yellow:  2.8km, 125m, 11 controls.

    Score-O:  16.7km, 37 controls.

Orange:  The score-o course has been designed to contain a number of orange level controls in the same general area.  Orange level controls will be denoted by having last number 1, 2, or 3. Of course even if you are an “orange” orienteer you are welcome to also try and find other controls as well - a score-o can be a nice time to try a few harder controls with no mis-punch if you don’t find them!  Controls 36, 37, and 47 are also close to orange level, especially with the good visibility this time of year.

    Score-O Rules:

    • Time limit:  3 hours. Penalty of 100 points per minute over time (don’t be late!).

    • Maps distributed at 10:50, with Mass start at 11AM.  Finish time 2PM.

    • Each control’s point value is the same as the control number, except control 50 is worth 153 points.

    • In addition to the start-finish area, two water stops are marked on the map (so I would recommend carrying some water for between these stops).  There are also porta-potties near the water stops.

    Important Map Notes:

    • Since the map was made, some forest management (cutting of trees) has occurred in the eastern part of the park.  This has been denoted on the map with overprint as follows:

      • New cleared areas are outlined in thick pink lines.  These areas are generally passable but slow due to plentiful downfall.

      • New rides are marked with thin pink lines.  There are nice trails along these rides, though travel perpendicular to the rides is sometimes harder than mapped due to new growth.

      • New fenced areas are outlined with black lines.  There are new trails around the perimeter of these fences.  One control is located within a fence. Entrances into the fenced area (“hatches” in the fence) are indicated by two short black lines perpendicular to the fence.  I did not re-map the vegetation within the fence, but did include a few new rides. You should not have to go through any nasty vegetation within the fence to reach the control.

    • In case you get off track, there is also a new logged area in the southwest part of the map, but no controls or route choices  are in this area so it is not marked on the map.

    • The large, double-green-slash clearing on the west side of Pinch road is now mostly 20-30ft tall trees.  Most areas are passable light-to-medium green with young trees and deadfall, while areas that get more sunlight (especially near Pinch Road) are dark green.  In addition to the mapped trails in this area, some of the rides though the clearing are now major trails – these are marked by overprinted dashed lines. The other rides are overgrown to various degrees.

    • One area of the map is marked as dangerous due to steepness – there are many other safer route choices to and from the nearby control.

    • There are numerous houses and other private property on the edges of the map.  In some important locations these areas have been marked as OB, but always respect property owners and stay away from houses and yards.  All roads around the perimeter of the park are in bounds.

    • Four trails that are not being maintained and are now indistinct paths have been marked with overprint X’s. One X is on a long E-W trail on the east part of the map: this trail is still very usable, just not as visible as you would expect based on the map, especially near the trail’s eastern end.  The three other X’s are on short trail segments that are badly overgrown.

    • In the southern section of the map there are a number of new bouldering trails, varying from indistinct paths to small trails.  You can usually make a good guess of where the trail is headed – towards the big rocks/cliffs nearby!

    • Just south of the start/finish a new boardwalk has been installed that is not on the map.
