Topic created by EricW on Mon Feb 11, 2019 at 1:40 pmDid anyone else catch the mention of "orientering" on WHYY radio on Sunday morning?It was on a list of activities related to a news story about Sunday hunting (or not), during the 7:00 or 8:00 hour. However it was not mentioned an hour later when they re-ran the story.

The only real inpact is we stay out of the woods completely. the first 2 weeks of shot gun season and rhe rest of the time we try to wear some orange. There are hunters out in the pines all year. fortunately. they hunt early morning and late evening.

Sometimes they do this hunting were a group of people walk and push the animals towards people to gun them down. We are also allowed to bait. so we come across lots of corn and potato mounds.

We were amused and wondered why anybody would do something like that. It was October-ish. Now, it is revealed.....

Reply by rgbortz on Wed Feb 20, 2019 at 12:25 pmPerhaps we should queery the orienteers in the 40 states that do allow Sunday hunting how that impacts our beloved sport. Other countries worldwide ? Who pays for the conservation of all the fauna we all love to see on our excursions ? Safety statistics anyone ? Is it safer to run in the woods with hunters about or to get in your car and drive to the grocery store ? Should we not allow cyclists to share the road ? Pity the poor hunter that wants to stay in an area with the wildlife being chased out, or at the least being frightened enough to seek out hiding places. Would you rather be in the woods with people with guns who must go through gun safety training and are there for a specific purpose or for a walk in the mall passing by countless people of questionable character and motive who have conceeled carry permits, or not ?Just an alternative view.

Reply by robw on Sun Feb 24, 2019 at 8:46 pmCurrently, the Pennsylvania Game and Wildlife Code prohibits Sunday hunting, except for coyotes and foxes, and hunting on regulated hunting grounds. 34 Pa. C.S. sec. 2303. There is a bill in the Pennsylvania Senate (Senate Bill 147), which would repeal that section and allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission to institute Sunday hunting by promulgating a regulation. This bill was approved by the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee on 2/5/2019 by an 8-3 vote. There is nothing in the current S.B 147 which would restrict when Sunday hunting can occur. This would be left entirely to the discretion of the Game Commissioners. A concern is that some Game Commissioners tend to think their duty is to represent the view of hunters, since the Commission is funded by the sale of hunting licenses, rather than all of the residents of Pennsylvania.I have no idea where matters stand politically at this time. The issue has been argued for decades, with, generally, legislatures and commissioners from the urban areas in favor and those from rural areas (where most hunting occurs) opposed to any change of the current law. I have not heard Gov. Wolf's views on the issue.

Reply by Guy-O on Wed Feb 27, 2019 at 7:13 pmThere is a big difference between concealed-carry permit holders in a mall, and hunters in a forest...It is highly unlikely that the firearm will be used in the mall, but highly likely the firearm will be used in the forest.

I think I'd much rather be in the woods given these stats I found:According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania hunters experienced the lowest number of hunting accidents on record in 2015 (the most recent year with stats compiled for public consumption.) There were 23 hunting-related shooting incidents statewide. Two resulted in fatalities. Reply by edscott on Mon Mar 11, 2019 at 12:17 pmI don't anticipate safey problems if there are some Sundays that certain venues will permit hunting. What I do invision is an increase in vandalized or stolen controls at those locations. We will probably need to react to whatever changes are coming by altering our future scheduling.
