The weather has not been kind to the Gear Grinder.  In 2017 we were pummeled with a significant snowfall that would not melt, we held off to the last moment to decide if we could have the event.  This year forecasts for rain toyed with our plan.  The weather man blew it for 1-2 inches of rain on Friday, we had a great day to hang the controls.  There were conflicting forecasts for Saturday's event, we got the worst case, a lot of rain in the morning.

As it was raining cats & dogs at 7am as we stood under the pavilion at Kulptown wondering if anyone would show up.  To our surprise, all but 3 of the preregistered riders came to ride Erik Eddy's well thought out & interesting courses.   Mountain bikers are a hearty breed!  We had a couple of runners too.

The awsome staff:  Dave Morgan, Brad Hall, Lauren Eddy, Bob Gross, Dave & Kathy Urban.  We also had Kyle Neuheimer from Oakbrook Brewing Company tapping some beer and Brandon Miller from Oakbrooks mountain bike team set up and man an aid station along old route 82.  Thanks, you all made the event run smoothly.

Thank you Diane for all of your support in the execution of this event!!!  I appreciate the support from DVOA and all the attendees giving their best effort.  We had a wild day with the conditions making the physical aspect and navigation more difficult (trail or stream?).

By the way, if you're interested in setting mountain bike orienteering course please contact me.  The Gear Grinder can be our big 'championship' event and having 1 or 2 other opportunities to mountain bike orienteer 'ousa/iof' style throughout the year would be appreciated (can add to regular event).  You don't need to be a mountain biker, and I can help with basic design principles and map generation.

Like us on Facebook if you haven't already and go see the photos I took from the shelter of the pavilion.  Boy, did it rain!  Those MTBO folks never stopped smiling.  There was plenty of pizza and beer (from Oakbrook Brewing) to go around.
