    Hello All,

Sandy and I are starting to plan our summer sprint series for 2018.   After last years success we are looking to expand on the summer sprint series.  This year our goal is to have between 8 and 12 sprint races throughout the summer.  We plan on having our first event on Word Orienteering Day which is Wednesday May, 23.  As I understand our club is very large so I am not opposed to having multiple events on world orienteering day so that all of our members can participate.

As of right now Sandy and I will each be hosting 2 or 3 events each.   So far the parks we have interest in hosting events at are the following:

    • Hibernia
    • Myrick Center
    • Warwick
    • Fort Washington
    • Norristown Hospital
    • Penn State Berks
    • Tyler (near the Commnuity College)
    • Lehigh Campus (if we can obtain permission)

We are currently looking for anyone who is willing to host an event this summer.  These events are very easy to set up.   After all the planning I was able to set up the day of the event in about half a day.  If you want to try event directing and/or course setting we will help you in hosting your event.

If you are interested in hosting an event please provide the following information:

What map would you like to use for the event?

What date would you like to host your event? (it can be any day of the week)

Also provide your email and phone number.

    Nate O.

Tentatively- could set early/mid June race at Lower Perkiomen Valley Park and/or JJ Audubon Center.  JJ might be a little more interesting.  Good central location.  Wednesday or Thursday night.  That's the only location I can do as it's 1/2 mile from work.

The Lehigh campus map is grossly out of date. There has been continuous construction on campus since the 2008 Chasing the Star.

What start time would these events have?

    White and yellow only?

Also, the list of parks you gave is the list you and Sandy are thinking of, right?  Not the master list you want everyone to chose from?

I beleive those are just suggestions-

last year there were two sprints at each event (courses open 6-7:30).  you can generalize it to a short yellow, about 2.0-2.5km (especially on maps that aren't optimal for 'sprint').  I think the maps were all, or adjusted to, 1:5,000.  Sprint is an actual format in orienteering (12-15 minute winning time) with this technical definition-

"A Sprint course should combine high-speed map reading and quick decision making with technically easy controls. The challenge should be in navigating through complex environments at high speed, to control sites that are technically easy for advanced level orienteers. Controls should be primarily on advanced beginner (Yellow) level, or Intermediate (Orange) level sites with nearby relocation options. Courses should include changes of direction, route choice as the terrain allows, and promote spectator opportunities. Unlike other formats, organizers may allow spectators throughout the course."

@Steve:  Yes there has been a lot of construction on the Lehigh map, but there are large parts of it that are still accurate.  I did a Happy New Year 2018 course there and most of it was fine.  If we get permission to use it, and depending on where we were allowed to park, I think it would be easy to come up with 2 great sprint courses on the parts of the map that haven't changed.

@Chris:  The maps listed are ones that either Nate or I are interested in using plus some that we think would make good maps for the series.  But we are completely open to others.  Our format last year was two beginner friendly sprinty type courses (lots of controls, changes of direction) both around 2 to 2.5 km.  A little shorter or longer is fine.  I wouldn't necessarily call them White and Yellow.  The format last year was that registration opened by 6:00pm (usually a little earlier if we were ready and people were there) and control pickup started promptly at 7:30 so that we could be cleaned up and gone by 8:00pm which was about the time it was getting dark, at least towards the end of the summer.

Oops ...  I see Eirk already replied.  Glad we agree!  And yes, the maps were printed at 1:5,000 or 1:4,000.

Add me (and Germantown Academy) to the list.  I will finally be finishing the mixed ISSOM (campus and sports fields) ISOM (extensive wooded areas) map sometime this Winter/Spring.  (Lyme took me out of my plan to finish it last Spring.)  It's mapped and drafted at 1:4000.

I would love it to be a big deal and invite the entire GA community.  So I will need to find out from our 2 contacts at GA about best dates to have an event there.  Any possibility to have an event on a weekend, when GA/DVOA could make it a big deal, and the start of ongoing partnering?
