New members, do you know you can see club rankings by clicking twice on the link above?

This was pointed out to me by somebody else - why are the scores so low this year? They seem OK relative to each other, but are less than half of what they'd be in previous years. I thought maybe we had some new hotshot blowing everybody else out of the water, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Is there some change with regard to calculations?

And looking at them again, they actually don't all appear to be OK relative to each other after all. The top people look OK but especially among those who don't have 4 events yet, there are some ranked/ scored much higher or lower than I'd expect compared to others.

Probably because we need 7 events to be ranked.  Our schedule has been rather lean this spring and attendance per event has been below average.  We need more volunteers for event directors and course setters so we can build both the number of events and level of participation.  At least 5 events were deleted from the schedule so far this year due to a lack of voiolunteers.   Nevermind.. I see the rankings published have people with less than 7 listed....  must just be that overall attendence is lower.

To answer Julie's question to the best of my understanding:

In order to accurately compare orienteers that usually run different courses, there need to be at least some people who run different courses at different events.  If the red runners only run red courses and green runners only run green courses, there is no way to compare the red and green runners.  If a few people run a red course (maybe when red was shorter) and then run green other times, their results serve as a 'bridge" to be able to compare the usual red and usual green runners.

Especially early in the year, if there are not enough events and not enough of these orienteers who do different courses, you can get a set of orienteers who can't be accurately compared to the rest of the club, so the system can correctly rank this group of orienteers among each other, but not relative to the rest of the club.  For an extreme example of this (as of 7-19-17), check out Sarah Davis F10 in the rankings.  She has done 3 events (so is listed in the rankings just below the people who have at least 4 events); her score would place her 3rd overall in the club, just above Wyatt.  She has been doing awesome on white courses, with 2 wins and one second (Nice job!).  All of the people that she has raced against have only done one white course each, so the ranking system can't compare this group of people with the rest of the club.  Hence Sarah, the best in the group, ends up with a very high ranking.

The top red/blue/green runners in the club have all either run against each other a fair bit by now or have a lot of common people they have run against, so the relative rankings of these orienteers make more sense.

Having the sprints in the rankings can also create a bit of wrinkle - since the sprints are less technical, relative times in the sprints can be a lot different than the standard 'woods' events.

The sprints don't appear to be included, which they shouldn't according to the typical rules (normal white-blue courses only).

I understand about the course crossover (we had a very in-depth explanation of the rankings calculations at the winter meeting one year) but usually by this time of year things don't look this strange. Maybe very few people have run different courses, moreso than normal. I'm still not sure if that explains the top score being in the 40s when usually it's in the 90s.

Now I see some of the sprints do appear to be included in rankings (or at least have scores assigned) despite that being atypical and not being marked as such with the red asterisk on the results page. So who knows what is happening Laughing

Just looked at the scores. THey were not that low two months ago. They were more normal. I had a few just over 60.

I'm a relatively new DVOA member (with a different primary club, but that doesn't keep others from being ranked as long as they're DVOA members), but do not appear in the rankings despite having attended 6 meets since we joined plus many of the summer sprints.

I hope that someone looks at getting the rankings looked at and/or updated before the end of the year to include new members, as well as to check on ranking points.

In any case, we're enjoying having more and new maps to run on in DVOA-land and getting to know more members than before we moved. Rankings are no big deal.

I think many people haven't done enough events to be ranked yet.  Due to fewer weekend events this year, and scheduling conflicts that kept me from attending what was on the calendar,  I haven't done 4 events yet.  Gad, I miss getting out in the woods.
