Join DVOA for the Annual Scout Orienteering Event at Quail Hill Scout Camp. Courses available for Scouts will include:
- White: Course For beginners and younger scouts with little or no orienteering experience. [Acceptable for First Class Advancement Requirement]
- Yellow Short: For scouts who have successfully completed a few White courses.
- Yellow Long: For scouts who have prior repeated success navigating courses on a map.
- Orange: Only for senior scouts and leaders with lots of orienteering experience.
Instruction from veteran DVOA orienteers will be available throughout the day, and will focus primarily on reading map features, handling the map, and developing smart navigational skills.
Advanced Courses (not designed for Scouts) will also be available to the general public, the best of whom fly through the woods. And remember, our DVOA members are friendly and approachable.
Starts: Anytime between 10:00am to 1:00 pm. All courses close at 3:00 pm.
Map details: Color map completely revised for this event. 1:5000 scale with 2.5 meter contours.Cost: Scouts pay the DVOA member fee of $7 per map (i.e. per team) which includes a $1
e-chip rental, then also a $1 camp fee for each participant not camping at Quail Hill.
DVOA uses an e-System to record your arrival at each flag from Start to Finish, providing an immediate print-out of your results at Download. And you take the map home with you.Pre-Registration Required Groups (BSA/GSA/Venture Crews – including any non-scout group)
So that we can organize ahead of time and make registration as smooth and enjoyable for all of us. Contact Event Director, John Gillette (listed above). We strongly encourage 2 (or at most) 3-member teams for Scouts to maximize everyone’s experience of reading and navigating on the map.
Make a Weekend of It – Camp out, pack up everything Sunday morning, then compete on a course before driving home. Contact Monmouth BSA Council to Reserve a Campsite.
Further Directions and Information can be found on DVOA’s website Schedule, along with Scout-friendly links for newcomers to read additional information about orienteering skills and practices.Sorry, no dogs allowed in camp.
