ED/CS Notes:

Come enjoy orienteering on Father's Day at Mt. Penn and visit the Pagoda while you are there. The views of Reading are fantastic. Ed Scott has been gracious enough to give his time as course setter to make sure this event stayed on the calendar. We still need to confirm some help so if you are available, go through the volunteer link and sign up for a role. Course specifics will be posted shortly. Hope to see many of you there.

Course setter’s notes: Mt Penn 6/17/12

Mt Penn did not suffer as much damage as French Creek in the snowstorm last October, but there are a few limbs down which might necessitate some small detours along the way.  The main concern is that the mountain bikers have been busy making even more new trails since our last run here.  Best strategy will be to use any unmarked trails when they are doing what you want them to do and drop them when they are no longer useful.  Some of them are quite distinct and can be difficult to distinguish from the original trails, so staying in map contact, even when on a trail, will be advantageous.

Many of the dry ditches have been converted in to downhill bike trails since the map was produced, so don’t be surprised if what appears on the map to be a remote dry ditch is a three foot wide swath of packed dirt… maybe with a few jumps along the way.

In general the vegetation mapping is still OK and the courses do not send anyone through severely thorny areas.  There are thick pockets of spicebush and a couple areas where the hickory saplings are hard to see through.  The ferns are up and sometimes obscure some nasty stony ground.

Please respect the red crosshatched areas of private property.
