UPDATE 2 Nov 15

Welcome to the Brave New World of Rutgers Ecological Preserve

_

Sunday, Nov 8th – Annual DVOA/HVO Dual Meet          Starts from 10am-1pm.  Pick-Up starts at 3pm

Our annual dual meet is once again returning to Rutgers Ecological Preserve this year….but not really.  This is not your father’s old Rutgers Preserve map anymore.  All of the courses will use the most renovated mapping of the park.  So you may not recognize long sort-of familiar areas.

Thanks to our LiDAR basemap and Sandy’s extensive remake of the Preserve 3 years ago, the map will debut areas of the park where no orienteer has dared to go.  Courses have sometimes sent them there anyway, but never with much certainty or lack of frustration.  Please note that since the mapping has been far more complex and labor intensive than ever imagined (at times analogous to mapping a large boulder field where only rootstocks 1.5m and up have made the cut), not all of the map will be completed by Nov 8th.  But no worry, mapping has focused on the best woods, and course design uses only what will be ready for the event.

Note -- We originally posted a Blue course, but it looked like a game of “pick up sticks.”  So we are now offering both longish Green and RedBlue courses to satisfy those who come to stretch out their legs.

So come out for our annual competition in full force (to be joined, I’m sure, by plenty of scouts and cadets) to run over hill, over dale, through the Preserve’s leaf-covered rolling hills and reentrants (punctuated with hundreds of unmistakable rootstocks and comfortingly modest climb), all in autumnal splendor.  I must admit, this is becoming my new “favorite DVOA map.”

Updated Course Stats (with brief descriptions):

White              2.00k   27m     11ctrls

Classic White course using trails and creeks through mostly downhill terrain (go figure), following a creek into the streamered Finish.

Yellow             2.94k   60m     13ctrls

Definitely an Advanced Beginner Yellow, always with linear feature route choices, but with lots of safe beautiful cross-terrain options for the more adventurous.

Orange            4.00k   65m     12ctrls

Everything from long intricate yellow legs to truly advanced legs, it will challenge you to make smart route choices in the best terrain.

Brown             3.82k   50m       9ctrls

A nice mix of short, medium and long legs through some of the prettiest terrain….and who can complain about the climb?

Green              5.41k    85m    12ctrls

I would love to run this course.  Long legs, medium legs, and cherry picking in quick progression, through a great variety of terrain and route choice, featuring the best areas of the Preserve.

RedBlue          7.95k   120m   15ctrls

Thanks to e-punch, you may recognize many of the same areas during your course, but from totally different directions.  I’ve had many of these legs on my mind during mapping.  So come out and enjoy the all-new, always-surprising (beautiful to sublime to Sandy dramatic) Rutgers Ecological Preserve.

P.S.  Please remember that Nov 8th will be our 2nd Sunday of Eastern Standard Time.  Pick-Up will begin at 3pm.  So if you anticipate the possibility of taking the scenic version on your course, please plan to go out on your course by noon. J

P.P.S.  Any groups planning to attend, please contact me with your numbers so that we print enough maps.
