ED/CS Notes:
Welcome to this year's Tyler State Park event. Parking and registration are in the Boardwalk section. With the large amounts of green on this map, there is a good bit of time spent on trails so the courses hopefully keep you focused on route choices. Keeping with what seems to be this year's trend, there is a walk to start (675 meters) but it is a pleasant walk along the creek with only 5 meters of climb.
Some indistinct trails on the map are no longer in existence. Where these trails might influence route choices, the trails have X's overprinted on them on the map. For Green through Blue, there is a section of woods that have many unmapped rootstocks but these shouldn't impact your navigation. Additionally, there are numerous cultivated fields on the west side of the creek, which I expect to be planted by May 15th. These have been marked out-of-bounds on the map.
The park has playgrounds, soccer fields, frisbee golf and a canoe rental, for anyone that wants to stretch their Oreienteering day. There are also several geocaches in the park.
White: While Tyler has plenty of paved trails, minimal time is spent on pavement. This course makes use of the trail system on both sides of the creek (the woods on each side of the creek have a different feel to them). Features on the course include a re-entrant and knoll, which are not often found on a White course.
Yellow: Again, minimal time is spent on paved trails. A couple of legs push the upper limit of Yellow difficulty as the logical route choice is off-trail but there are very strong straight-line features to use for navigation.
Orange: This course should be a fun mix of what are normally advance control features but with lots of choices for attack points and catching features. A small stream will need to be crossed probably 3 times, but plenty of rocks provide a dry-footed means across the stream. If you've been considering moving up from Yellow, this might be one to try.
Brown: This course combines some nice open woods with other typical Tyler features, with an emphasis on route choice. There could be 4 small stream crossings but doable with dry feet.
Green, Red, Blue: With Start on the west side of the creek, these courses will get to the northern section of the park above the covered bridge. You'll also get to see a nice section of woods that is all evergreens. With all the dark green in Tyler that necessitates control placement near trails, the emphasis of the courses is on route choice which should give fast times.
