DVOA will host an orienteering event in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on September 18, 2011. We are using the existing Stuckey Pond orienteering map. Parking and registration will be at PEEC - the Pocono Environmental Education Center. Start and finish will be short walks away.
Although the maps are over 10 years old, things have not changed much at all. Vegetation and water features are all still reasonably accurate. There is definitely climb on the advanced courses, but note that climb was measured using straight line and it can be significantly reduced by choosing some "around" routes.
Most of the terrain in the Delaware Water Gap NRA is currently embargoed for orienteering until the 2012 North American Orienteering Championships (NAOC). The small piece of the Stuckey Pond map we will be using for this event is the one mapped area open for training. For more information on the North American Orienteering Championships, please see www.naoc2012.org. Thus, we are also advertising this event as the NAOC 2012 Training Event.
Stuckey Pond was field checked in 1999 and printed at 1:15,000. We are offering pre-registration and pre-payment for the September 18th event. While it is not at all necessary to pre-register, if you do, you will be given the opportunity to select a 1:10,000 version of the existing map for your course. We will be laser printing a limited quantity of 1:10,000 versions of all courses; to guarantee a 1:10,000 map you must pre-register and pre-pay by Monday, September 12th at noon. We will also be over-printing courses on the 1:15,000 offset printed maps for those that pre-register and select 1:15,000. We will hand draw courses on the 1:15,000 maps if we run out of pre-printed course maps.
Note that for NAOC 2012, maps for the elite long courses will be printed at 1:15,000. Maps for the sprint for all courses will be 1:5000. Maps for all other courses will be 1:10,000.
Copies of the two existing 1:15,000 Water Gap maps, Stuckey Pond and Spackman Creek, will be on sale at the September 18th event: $3 per map or $5 for both.
Note: Remember, it is NOT necessary to pre-register and/or pre-pay, but doing so will guarantee you a map at the scale you prefer and help us estimate the correct number of maps to print.
