Notes: The "Special" course is a trail race using a map with a finish near the Orienteering finish.
ED/CS Notes:
Beautiful fields, pavillion and playground provides a great venue to see the early Spring coming just coming alive.
Fields and trails await the begineer level navigators on the White & Yellow courses. Yellow adds some criss-crossing route choices and some beyond-trail navigation, e.g. to field corners.
Lots of controls on Orange, including some advanced level controls in the forest - very close to easier previous controls you can use as an attack point. This, plus the still reasonably open forest in early Spring make this a great course to use in learning some advanced skills. And at Warwick, you're always close to a trail for a quick recovery, if needed.
Brown and Green stick to the traditional southern 2/3 of the park, with a design intended to provide good navigation, without excessive climb - plus a few cases where you'll want to think carefully about a route choice in the forest, vs. hopping out to one of Warwick's many trails.
Red explores the North side of the park (without tempting you into a sketchy creek crossing - controls right at the bridge), for some rarely used terrain exploration. There's a bit more briar on that side than you might expect given the mapping, so you might want to select less-green route choices, and be careful where you dive into the forest.
Other course notes:
- Yellow & Red courses have some criss-crossing lines between controls - so check the lines and control numbers that you are running to carefully.
- The Green course has some sharp zig-zags, so like Yellow & Red - check those lines and control numbers carefully.
- There's a construction area right where the main parking lot connects to the main trail. It's accurately mapped as of a week before the event - but as it's overprint, you might want to take a look at it beforehand, and look at the map clip at the start, if you want to avoid precious seconds getting stuck on the wrong side of the construction fencing.
Early spring conditions have visibility in the forest still quite good - no green-leaves visible yet as of April 1st, but they may just be popping out by April 7th - still, quite near the best forest visibility of the year.
If it's wet in the days preceeding, you'll find plenty of puddles to splash through on all courses - dry shoes for hanging around afterwards are recommended!
All courses have different first controls, so there should be little or no excess waiting for your starts.
Maps have been professionally printed by a company being considered for our Fall A-event, so you can expect top quality prints.
Finally, we have an unusual combination of this orienteering event being immediately following a 5k Trail Run at Warwick earlier that morning - so if you want to show up around 9:15-9:30am you can watch the trail runners finish (until around 9:45am), and see if you can say hi & talk one of them into trying some orienteering!
