ED/CS Notes:

Welcome to Green Lane:.

We will be using the area around the “Stone Pavilion”, opposite the parking lot of the park office. It is very close to the south park entrance, of Gravel Pike. There are restrooms there as well as picnic facilities.

It’s been very wet this summer:) It’s been very wet in the woods, so far, also. The vegetation denotations on the map, however, are pretty good. Generally, the woods aren’t much greener than mapped. The biggest thing to watch for is dead fall. The entire park has LOTS of it, so it creates a patchy network of areas that you simply have to go around the downed tree(s) and then, be on your way. Some areas marked as white have a grassy weed growing in them. Large swaths of thigh high weeds. Generally, there is nothing under them, but you can’t see it to know. Please use caution if you find yourself in one of those patches.

Montgomery county has been doing a lot of renovations to the park. What were once mowed grassy areas are now rough open land that hasn’t been mowed this year. Rough open land may mean rough, slow going.

The area in the middle of our map that had a trail running over a pipeline, that we always used is also now closed. It too is signed at it's ends. Please don’t enter into a signed closed area, even though a trail remnant may be visible. There are MANY other trails in the woods that have been closed, especially in the southern part of the park. There are signs to keep park users off of these closed trails. The net result is a more defined trail network and less of a rats maze.  There is no reason to use the area in the middle of the map as we’ve hung the course to avoid it. In some cases you may find yourself at another trail remnant that is marked as an indistinct trail. We left those trails marked on the maps as they are indeed a navagatable feature. Just don’t enter closed areas at the signs.

The trail updates have been made to the maps. The vegetation changes have been made to the grassy areas on our maps also. I think all the new buildings have been added. Rootstocks have NOT been updated.

Please be aware that all the roads in the park are open to vehicular traffic. All courses cross open roads. We will sign as many expected crossing areas as we can. Some advanced course participants will also cross Hill Road at the top of the hill. Again, use caution

Please look at the distances of the courses before you choose what you are going to do. Because of the off limits section in the middle of the map, the advanced courses that use the north part of the map are on the long side. But then again you all have a lot of pent up energy since there hasn’t been a lot of orienteering around here lately.
