Hey DVOA
As you all know this is my first time setting courses for DVOA. Luckily i have had a great deal of help from Sam Reed helping me out in the field. Also I had Bob Burg help me as my course consultant. He gave a great idea on what is a good course and what works and what doesn't and basically everything that is need to be known about course setting. The woods at FCE are pretty open in some areas. I was even surprised to see how much of the map was open and good to use for courses. My suggestion for moving through the woods is to pick what looks to be the fastest way through or around the nasty woods. Also the woods within 100M of the trails are not nice but they are manageable. Plus once you get through it I promise you woods that are clean and fun. So just remember the map is old and that the vegetation is not mapped correctly. The courses all have their own uniqueness to them. Which makes it great selection of courses to run:White is 2.8KM with 40M of climb. This is a great course for the beginner orienteer. It has a limited amount of climb but has all the awesome feature that we all love to see.Yellow is 3.5KM with 95M of climb. This is a challenging yellow course in my opinion. it has a pretty good combo of on trail route choices and off trail route choices.Orange is 4.9 KM with 150M of climb. Orange was probably the hardest course to design in this area. There are a lot of big features for you to follow. It is great for if you just started orange and want a little bit of a fun challenge.Brown is 3.7KM with 75M of climb. If you like your courses with little amount of climb this is the way to go. It has an awesome combo of short and long legs.Green is 5.4Km with 150M of climb. This course gives you some pretty cool sections of short fast controls connected by some technical long legs.Red is 7.6Km with 215M of climb. My favorite course of the day. This has a pretty sweet course with a butterfly loop. This also has some cool route choices on the longer legs. I suggest doing red at FCE!Blue is 9.7KM with 295M of climb. This is a challenging course. Blue takes you all over the place while keeping it pretty technical. If you're up for the challenge i say go for it!The walk to start is a little long but it also makes for better courses. It is roughly a 10 minute walk to start.Remember to stay hydrated! it is going to be a hot day and there will be plenty of water at the water stops. Please take a second and drink up on your course to make it as enjoyable as possibleI hope everybody can come out and run at French Creek East.FromNate
