ED/CS Notes:
Our annual "day after MASOC" offers a new look in the course design. For the first time we are (1) using epunch for the event, and (2) getting a quick tour of the area around Hopewell Furnace. Parking and registration is in the lot by the Pool at French Creek.

Course setters notes: May 7 & 8, 2011
The map has aged relatively well, but there are obviously some changes. Some of the areas used have not been updated since the original fieldwork done in the fall of 1988. Other areas have been updated more recently. By this time next year we will be using a totally updated map.
Some areas marked green on the map are no longer green, some areas shown as white are now quite green. In general the green splotches in the woods East of Route 345 on the slopes above Baptism Creek are gone and the southeastern part of Mt Pleasure has grown up in Spicebush, Barberry, and Multi-flora Rose. Believe me, I am NOT showing you the worst of it.
The fence that was to hold the final control on all courses was recently removed by the park. The flag is there on a stake at that location, and the finish streamers begin right at the flag. Don’t forget to punch the final control before running along the strings of multicolored pennants to the finish.
There is also a bike Race scheduled Saturday. Everyone on Courses 1,2,3, and Adult Yellow should be aware that you might encounter mountain bikers on the trails in the middle of your courses. Keep to the side and don’t dart in front of them. The bike race organizers know we are here and so the riders should also be observant.
There is a Frisbee golf tournament Saturday too. Only the Adult Yellow course crosses their path in one spot. Look ahead and to your right as you approach control 1 to be sure of having a clear path across the opening. Once you pass control one you’ll not see them again.
During the Saturday afternoon score event there will be a film crew working within the village. It is possible that some routes choices will be closed. Be flexible or go for controls in other areas. Stay out of their way, and stay off fences and away from buildings. And, of course do not run with the bulls or any other livestock. The Hopewell Furnace Staff has invited you to go through the village, but please stay on pathways as you navigate to your controls. Advanced course runners should also stay on paths through the village, but can cut across unfenced fields and woodlots. It is the first time we have been able to use this area for courses.
