ED/CS Notes:

DVOA's summer mega controls event this year will once again be held at Frances Slocum State Park northeast of Wilkes/Barre, PA on August 10th and 11th.

Everyone from everywhere is invited to this informal format for a weekend of unique orienteering and socializing. Join us for the weekend and camp with us or stay nearby so you can spend some quality time getting to know more of your orienteering family.

Frances Slocum is a great state park with camping, picnicing,a large horseshoe shaped lake, athletic fields and a very large swimming pool with a concession stand.

The orienteering will include a score-o which will be done via a combination of foot, paddle and peddle. There will be no requirement to do all three. The entire score-o may be done on foot, but to score the really big points you will need to paddle. Paddle is the operative word here. The paddling can be done in a canoe, kayak, rowboat, peddleboat (all available for rent or preferably bring your own) or paddleboard. All rules must be followed for state waters. Those so inclined can pick up points on the western potion of the map via mountain bike (your own) or by foot.

The foot and bike-o control sites are the same ones used last year but now you must figure out which ones will get you maximum points (or just get them all). There will be no time limit (except to get out of the woods before the park gates close) so  no one has an advantage for highest points total.

There are four catagories (if you want to see how you did compared to others)

1. One day solo 2. One day team 3, Two day solo 4. Two day team

Remember, this entire weekend is very informal, so if you just want to get out, enjoy the woods and find a few controls while you're at it, welcome to it.

Did I say the highest points controls will be on the water ?

There will be a memory/photo-o for those who have done the score-o first.

A photo-o only will be for those who haven't done the score-o.

There will be a paddle-o only for those who don't wish to do the foot/bike-o portions.

Full details will be divulged at the event.

All of the above can be done on either Saturday or Sunday or both days.

The night-o will be Saturday night. There will be 24 controls of which you must choose 15 to spell three words. Each control will have three letters assigned to it of which you must choose one. No control may be visited more than once. Some letters are repeated so you will have to do some planning before running yourself out of options. It will be highly unlikely any two people will choose the same controls, much less in the same order. The same control locations as last year will be used, but as you can decern there will be no significant advantage.

We will also set up some very short sprint course utilizing the training kit which has a printer for immediate split printout, so bring your e-punch finger stick. This same kit may be used to set up a course for children of any age. We will have finger sticks for their use.

All of the other orienteering will not require e-punching or punching of any sort. There will also not be any clue sheets, just numbered or lettered flags in the circles. You will be given control sheets on which, for the score-o, you will record the control value you find at which number; for the night-o the letter you choose at which number.

The map fees will be $6 for your first map. You can use the score-o map for the memory/photo or the photo only or the paddle only Os. Any additional maps will be $2. If doing the night-o only the fee is $6. If you already bought your first map the night-o map will be $2.

Being so very informal much of this is subject to alteration.

Stay tuned for updates, clarifications, additions, subtractions or guesses.
