ED/CS Notes:

Revised Map!

The Evansburg map was last fully remade in the year 2000.  Since then, changes to trails, vegetation, and even buildings have occurred, which has resulted in some unneccesary challenges for competitors in past years.
For the 2011 event, we have made over 200 map updates to trails, buildings and vegetation to make this years courses better.  In particular, trails, fields and buildings should match well with what is on the ground, especially  around the beginner and intermediate courses.  Advanced courses will enjoy updated mapping not only of trails, but also of updated vegetation along different route choices and nearby control circles.

Course-specific notes:

Orange, Brown, Green, Red, Blue:  the course lines criss-cross a few times, so please keep a close eye on the control number you are heading for, as well as the lines interconnecting them, to ensure you are aiming for the right one.

Orange, Green, Red, Blue:  some routes can potentially go nearby houses within the park.  Please stay to the edges of the yards, or along the trails which pass through the yards.  The more obvious areas to avoid are marked with olive green, or purple overprint.
Orange:  has a leg with an option to travel through a new, partially-mapped section of the park.  This section stands out with a white-and-green diamond pattern showing unmapped forest.  Within this area, the trails are mapped well, which provides a few different route choices on this leg.

Water: Water is provided at two locations: the start-finish area, which most courses will pass through mid-course, and the Kratz Road bridge where Red and Blue will pass through twice.  The location of water near the Kratz Road bridge is marked with the water cup symbol on your map.  For the water & refreshments in the start-finish area, please look around at where these are before you start, so you can know where they are as you run by them on your course.

Cautions:

Roads:  All courses cross park roads, and parking lots which likely will have some traffic, incl. other orienteers.  Advanced courses cross or run along public roads on which I have seen traffic travelling up to 45 mph.  There are no crossing guards at any of the places you may cross.  Please exercise normal caution to avoid vehicles when crossing these areas.

Muddy trails: If it has been wet the week preceeding the event  - at press-time this is still uncertain -some of the trails , esp. the wider ones with strips of rough open along them can get very muddy and chewed up by horses.  You might want to bring a change of shoes for afterwards.

Vegetation: Advanced course competitors should note that vegetation in particular has not been fully remapped, and, due to age, has often changed by a shade lighter or darker.  Very roughly speaking, there is a bit less dark green than mapped, though it is still best avoided, and some of the white areas are now light green.  In most cases, courses have been designed to take you through the lighter areas, and allow several trail options in the thicker areas of the park.

Poison Ivy: While there is poison ivy visibile in the park, its potency is much reduced as fall has approached.  Course vetter Wyatt Riley, who moved to the East Coast in large part to get away from the comparable (but more virulent) poison oak plant prevalent in California, has simply exercised the normal precautions of long-pants, and a shower afterwards, and has ended up with only a single dot or two of poison ivy, over a total of almost 10 vetting runs through the park.
