ED/CS Notes:

For DVOA’s final event of the year we offer a holiday treat of unique SJ pineland terrain, to experience the brand new map of Four Mile Circle, extensively revised Winter 2018 and May / Nov 2019 which covers the most useful orienteering half of the map.  Our courses will use only the areas that have been updated, most recently reclaiming the previously inaccessible NW corner of 4 Mile including the longest most inviting reentrant in the park whose vegetation has changed dramatically since mapped mostly white woods in 2005.

Come join more than 50 JROTC cadets from 2 units who attended our recent Area 4 Championship as well as 35 SJ Outdoor Club members (who the Burtons have been inviting for years) who are showing up this year in unprecedented numbers which Pat and Bob will be guiding around the White and Yellow courses.

Long range weather forecasts have stayed unusually consistent for the past 4 or 5 days – 30’s on set-up day Saturday, an inviting mid-40’s day on Sunday, both rainless – so here’s hoping we can count on that.

Onto Course Descriptions

All courses require arduous climb in this pineland state forest, starting with 20m on the 2.9k White, capping off with an overwhelming 100m climb on the 9.7k Blue.  Cross terrain (advanced) navigation offers a lot more white woods than previously available, and richly rewards careful map-reading and route choice through more complicated vegetation and trail-rich areas.

Needless to say, 4 Mile has none of those pesky boulder fields and stony ground of 8-10-12 5m contour hillsides, not even marshes.  Just gently rolling hills (of 2.5m contours) with lots of trails and fire ditches monopolizing many areas, totally devoid in others.  Plus lots of picturesque areas featuring pine-needle and moss-covered open woods, clusters of Mt Laurel, then of course plenty of blueberry groundcover.

We’ll be meeting just inside the park’s main entrance (first road to your left when entering the park), just behind the fire tower on the left side of Rt 72 just before you reach the entrance when driving east from the actual 4 Mile Circle (the intersection of Rts 70 and 72). Our normal staging area for 4 Mile events.

Drive over to Jersey for our last event of the season.  You will enjoy these woods, the map and courses.
