Map Maker’s & Course Setter’s Notes

Welcome to the Crow’s Nest Preserve and the French Creek South orienteering map.  The map covers Natural Land Trust’s Crow’s Nest Preserve and portions of State Gamelands #43.  A section of the French Creek Central map has also been included on the north of the map as that area has its best access from the south.
The landscape of the map is varied including parts of the floodplain of French Creek, agricultural fields, and sections of woodland at various stages of maturity.  The area at the south end of the map has an exposure of diabase rock, a type of granite.  This leads to rocky areas, cliffs, and some huge boulders.  There is evidence of small-scale quarrying in places.  The advanced courses will have the opportunity of playing in the rocks.
In places the runnability is lower than shown on the map due to downed branches from the October snowstorm.  The ground is generally wetter than shown on the map.
Roads: all the courses, except White, cross roads.  Take care when crossing as the line of sight is poor in places.
Ticks: there are areas with high concentrations of ticks.  Check for ticks after orienteering, or even better, get a friend to check you over.

Important Traffic Alert

PennDOT will be replacing the last of three structurally-deficient state highway bridges on Harmonyville Road starting March 19. This bridge is between Route 345 (Pine Swamp Road) and Bethesda Road. If you are traveling to the preserve from the west, or following directions that lead you to the preserve from Route 23 via Route 345, you will be directed to follow a detour.

A map showing the location of the closed bridge, as well as the parking and start/finish areas for our event can be found at http://g.co/maps/ynhwu
