ED/CS Notes:
Start and Finish are close to parking.
White Course:
- Because of the lack of a substantial trail network, the white course doubles back on itself and is a little longer than usual. In addition, some of the trails are narrow and occasionally you will encounter branches and small seedlings that have grown across the trail. They are easy to get past but make the trail a little difficult to see in spots.
Yellow Course:- The Yellow course also doubles back on itself. There are a few opportunities for going through the woods without a feature to follow, but there is always an alternative: a safer but longer route that goes around. The course makes use of several rough open areas that have a lot of low growing bushes and ferns making for a somewhat physically challenging course. Full leg covering is highly recommended.
Orange and Advanced:- There are lots and lots and lots of unmapped dot knolls, small depressions and broken ground all over this map. In some cases it’s not clear to me why the mapper mapped some and not others. Where they have been used as control locations, there are other features that should get you to the correct spot and I’ve placed the controls where you should be able to see them from a good distance away.
- The ferns have grown substantially between when I set the courses and now so you will definitely encounter lots of ferns. However, I’ve stayed out of most of the really bad areas so you can usually see the ground through the ferns making it easy to avoid rocks and fallen trees. But, your routes might be different than mine so there are no guarantees.
- Also, the maps and control descriptions were printed before the stakes were put in. On a few controls, the location (which side) might be a little off depending on where I could get the stake into the ground.
- Some of the open areas now have grasses with very sharp seed pods that hook onto and then work their way through socks and shoe fabric. You might want to consider gaiters or duct taping the tops of your shoes.
EVERYONE: Check carefully for ticks when you are done. I have found a few after every outing.
