Score-O

Event Director: Rob Wilkison
Course Setter: Rob Wilkison and see choices to Volunteer to help at this event 🙏
Notes: 90 minute score with a mass start at Noon. Parking at Sand Spring parking lot, with carpooling from there to near the start location. Allow 10 minutes by car from Sand Spring to the start line. Very limited parking at the start.
ED/CS Notes:
This event provides an opportunity to explore an area which has only been used one time, and which probably will not be used frequently in the future because of limited parking access. At last fall's Hickory Run Rocks A meet, runners on the Blue, Red, Green X and Orange courses in Sunday's long event started on the Gould's Run area, although the Green X and Orange courses only visited the southern portions of the area. The northern tip of the area was used for the model event. The problem with the area is that there are only two small parking lots at opposite ends of the map, each holding a maximum of approximately 20 cars. Without hiring busses, as was done last fall, the solution used for this event is to carpool and have a mass start score-o. So everyone will meet at the Sand Spring Lake parking lot for registration between 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. There will be a carpool sign-up sheet at registration. At 11:40 the carpool will travel about 3 miles to the parking and start/finish area, where the mass start will occur at noon.
There will be twenty-four (24) controls in the woods, each having a value between 30 to 60 points. Controls with a number in the 30's will have a value of 30, those in the 40's with a value of 40, etc. There is a 90 minute time limit, (bring a watch), with severe penalties for going overtime, so everyone should finish by 1:30 p.m., and the carpool drivers can then take their passengers back to their cars a Sand Spring Lake, where there is a swimming area for those who got too hot running in the woods.
The map used last fall has been reformatted by Fred Kruesi to include only the Gould Run area north and west of Hickory Run. Scale is 1:10,000 with 5 m. contours. Only 100 maps have been printed and control descriptions have been printed on the front of the map. In the unlikely event there are more than 100 participants, late arrivals may need to find someone to share a map and run with, so get to registration early! There will be no beginner's course, only the 90 minute score-o. The controls are roughly 2/3rd advanced and 1/3rd intermediate level.
The map is bounded by Pa. Route 534 to the north and east, Hickory Run to the south, and Black Run, the Lehigh River and the adjacent railroad tracks to the west. There is no reason for anyone to go near the railroad tracks and they are out-of-bounds. There may be possible route choices using the edge of Route 534, but take care not to go on the paved roadway because traffic can be heavy and fast this time of year.
The area is a mixture of white and light green woods, with scattered patches of semi-open areas. There is very little medium or dark green, even in summer. Certain parts of the area have large numbers of dot knolls and small depressions, probably the remnants of old rootstocks, many of which are unmapped. There are only two controls on dot knolls, both of which are the largest in their immediate area. The area consists of a hill with steep slopes near Hickory Run and the Lehigh River, but flatter in the upper sections, with Gould Run cutting into the hillside as it flows to the Lehigh. It is probably as nice and open a woodland as will be found in DVOAland in mid-summer.
