ED/CS Notes:

Come Spend Mothers Day with DVOA at Fair Hill.  We are offering a special $3 Event Fee for all Mothers running with us on the 12th.  Ralph Tolbert has provided the notes below for a challenging array of courses across the open plains of the park.  So bring Mom and join us at Fair Hill

Welcome to Fair Hill Little Egypt.  The Little Egypt map was published in February 2007 with field work beginning in 2005.  Changes impacting the map include new unmapped trails and, of course, new rootstocks. Generally, the mapped rootstocks will have little or no earth left on them and the trunk will have decayed significantly – no bark.  A new wider bridge (not mapped) over the headwaters of the Christina River is ~70 meters upstream from the original narrow one.

The map scale is 1:10,000 with 5-meter contour intervals.

Course - specific notes:

Part of the White course utilizes a natural gas pipe line right-of- way.

None of the courses cross the Elk Creek on the western edge of the map.

Red and Blue course runners have a route choice that could include a surface crossing of Appleton Road, tunnel or bridge crossing; exercise caution if you choose the surface route.

Brown, Green, Red and Blue courses will pass through the University of Delaware Water Shed study area.  This was started back in 2007 (shortly after the map was published) and the area has been enlarged.  There are numerous rainfall collection points, stream-flow monitoring apparatus, a small shed, and many pipes and streamers covering a large area.  NONE of this equipment is mapped!   Brown, Green, Red and Blue Course legs will take you through this area – watch your step!

I hope you enjoy your day at Fair Hill as much as I enjoyed designing the courses and field checking.

Ralph Tolbert
